Momodou
Momodou is 13 and has Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy. He lost his mother in 2020 and has since been in the care of his father, living in an extended family household with stepmothers and their children. After his mother's death, he attended a special needs school that gave him the structure and support he needed. When that school closed, the fragile stability he had built disappeared with it.
His father leaves for the market early each morning and returns only in the evening, leaving Momodou alone and unattended for hours at a stretch. The isolation that followed was prolonged and damaging in ways that are difficult to overstate.
The situation inside the home has been deeply troubling. Reports indicate that Momodou was not included in family mealtimes and was given leftover food rather than eating with the household. His clothes and personal belongings are kept outside the house, under a mango tree, where he essentially lives. This has led to his clothing being stolen and left him without basic privacy or dignity.
Momodou began to receive support after being introduced to Orchard House through the Sadiq Trust outreach programme, which arranged for a paid caregiver to look after him during the day. The difference this made to his quality of life was immediate and significant
Every child deserves to eat at the table, to sleep under a roof, to have their belongings kept safe. Through Orchard House, we hope to give Momodou not just care and therapy, but the dignity that should never have been taken from him in the first place.
